Engineering membrane electrode assembly for advanced polymer electrolyte water electrolyzer

As an important energy carrier in terms of carbon neutrality, green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis using renewable electricity has attracted worldwide attention. The polymer electrolyte electrolyzer (PEWE) the potential to be a mainstay market future because its superior performance. However, development PEWE is constrained slow progress membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which essential component and largely determines cost performance system. Therefore, MEA must optimized from aspects reducing improving promote PEWEs. In this review, we first discuss recent materials design strategies MEA, including cost, activity, stability catalysts, distribution thickness ionomers, ion transport efficiency exchange membranes (IEMs). Then, effects all components interlayer interfaces on ions, electrons, mass transfer and, consequently, are analyzed. Finally, propose perspectives developing optimizing catalyst activity IEM, interface contact between adjacent components, evaluation methods
